Incense Beast 1
Hand-built dark stoneware, kiln-glazed in anagama wood kiln, 6.5h x 4w x 7d
These incense beasts are based on a 17th century Japanese incense burner. I have updated the form and design using all the images of monsters and gargoyles stuffed in my brain over the years. Inspirations include Maurice Sendak’s drawings, the cathedral at Notre Dame, Tolkien, and the Komainu, the lion-dog sculptures guarding many Shinto shrines in Japan, along with my neighborhood dogs and many trips to the zoo with my daughters. These sculptures are designed to work beautifully and more importantly, to entertain. With their leering smiles and little feet these pieces say, “I’m cute but I will bite!”
Incense Beast 2
Hand-built stoneware, copper glaze, wood-soda fired, 9H x 6W x 9L
Sunset Beast
Hand-built from wheel-thrown parts, 21h x 22w. Currently watching over a family on a beautifully wooded lot outside of Boston
Moonrise Beast
Hand-built from wheel-thrown parts, 22h x 24w
Moonrise Beast was set at the very front of the kiln. Her clay, structure, glazing and placement were all considered to take advantage of the extreme heat and heavy ash deposits of the firebox. The glaze, a river clay picked up during a swim in Maine, reacts well to ash. Its high-iron content seems to go clear when struck by ash and the relative coolness of the back lets the glaze keep its pebbled surface as seen in a cone 10 gas kiln. Currently watching over a home in Boston.
